Gray spot on bathroom ceiling probably mold - does the sheetrock/drywall need to be removed?
Our house is brand new just over a year old and the bathroom vent has been leaking water. Not just dripping, but streaming water each time it rains slightly hard. Couple days ago I noticed the spots on the ceiling not surprised considering the amount of water that was coming in through the vent. The contractor came by the house and explained what he'd be doing to fix both the vent and the mold. He said he'd go into the attic and remove the mold he sees then use bleach to kill off any traces and just paint over the gray spots. Is this a typical fix for this issue? I just want to make sure we aren't being taken by this guy and that he isn't just doing the bare minimum. We have a 1 year old and I want to make sure ALL mold is removed properly, which is why I'm concerned he isn't replacing the drywall. Any thoughts?
What, if any, is the "R"value of common drywall?
Both 1 2" & 3 4" . Thank you.
Is drywall mud supposed to crack?
I am having a professional drywaller repair water damage in my ceiling. He had to cut out and replace two sheets of sheetrock. He used meshed tape for the joints. The sheetrock he used was brown, not the regular white ones I have seen. Anyway, he covered the entire area of replaced sheetrock and joints with one layer of mud and said it would have to dry and then he'd come back. I am noticing a lot of cracking now as the mud is drying. It is still not completely dry because it's cold to the touch. I voiced my concern to his boss telling him it's cracking a lot I also see a lot of knife marks , but he said mud always cracks because it shrinks when it dries. I have had several walls in my basement replaced and finished and I have NEVER seen this happen. The boss says not to worry... that I'll be completely happy when the job is done. He says his employee will sand and then cover it with another layer of mud, and do the same thing when that dries. He says there will be no cracks when they retexture the entire ceiling. I still am uneasy about the whole thing because of the cracking I've seen. Is this normal for mud to crack as it's drying or did the guy apply it too thick? Should I fire these contractors or see how it plays out? I am definitely not paying them a dime until the job is done satisfactory.
