Blind homeschool parents?
What advice would you give a blind couple who wish to homeschool their kids in regards to minimizing the criticism and ridicule and possible unnecessary intervention as they'll likely get enough of that just being parents... It's sadly quite common . One has enough risidual vision to read print with a heavy duty electronic vision aid. The other has no sight but is incredibly inteligant and computer savvy. Both are very well read and creative and have thought of many alternative methods to use in teaching their kids such as teaching braille along with print, starting typing very early, implementing 20 20 Pens, raised line paper in the early years, large print books, computers, physical teaching aids, etc Any advice to avoid the possible problems with family, friends, and of course any others who could cause problems? The problem is there are already a lot of ignorant people out there who think the blind can't raise children without caretakers or government aid or some other form of sighted help. They are determined to homeschool, as the mother is a product of homeschooling and they both believe their children will get a better education this way. They only worry that it will just be another excuse for people to try to...revoke their parenting rights, for lack of a better term.
Okay homeschool parents - MATH curriculum choice... please?
Central Christian Academy is the accredited homeschool academy I've decided to go with, but we need special H E L P with math. She is going into 6th grade. She can catch on to things like long division and cancelling out when multiplying fractions, but still has to count out 6 times 4. Central Christian Academy prefers PACEs but will allow one of several other choices. I want to be certain to give her just the right math curriculum. PLEASE look at these non ACE choices for math, and advise me which one you think would work best. I could really use another person's or persons', for that matter perspective, especially if you have ANY experience with any of these Thanks acces inc.com cca cca.php?page nonace horizon
For other homeschool parents, do you take the summer 'off' from school?
If you are still going through the summer, what activities do you do? If you take off, what factors made you decide to take off?I'm just curious, thanks for any ideas.
Do any of you homeschool parents work outside the home as well?
I am just wondering how feasible it is to be a homeschool mom or dad and work outside the home full time as well. Isn't being a homeschool parent a full time job?
How many homeschool parents think Penn Foster should add a new subject?
Called Ethics and Morality??? It could be a required course every year, not an elective. They could cover such topics as > How to tell the difference between asking for help and cheating> Following the Rules, why it is important> Doing the right thing, even when you may not get caught doing the wrong thing.> The consequences of a poor educationI don't know, the possibilities are endless.Anyone else have any ideas for subject material?Do you think this would help improve public perception of this program or homeschooling in general?ummm, maybe I should've added " wink wink" or " tongue in cheek" guys, it's a joke, calm down UGH your answers are just too good I'm putting it to a vote.thanks for the replies. and even thanks to you that took the time to voice your displeasure of this question offline. yikes
Are there any homeschool parents who can help me figure out what kind of curriculum to use this year?
My son is 13 and learning disabled and unable to sit in a regular school class. I need to find a cheap curriculum for him and not sure how to go about it.
Scott and Andrea Bass, average homeschool parents, arrested in Arizona just for homeschooling their children?
If this can happen to your average homeschool parents like Scott and Andrea Bass then this can happen to any of us. There is something wrong when the government is arresting two parents for just engaging in typical homeschooling activities. What can we do to support Scott and Andrea Bass who have become martyrs for the homeschool way of life?washingtonpost.com wp dyn content article 2010 02 10 AR2010021002403.html" A malnourished Phoenix girl was locked in a bathroom without running water for two months, beaten with metal rods, and forced to exercise until exhaustion because her father said she had stolen food and cheated on a home school test, police said Wednesday." " Scott and Andrea Bass, the 14 year old girl's father and stepmother, were arrested Feb. 4 for investigation of child abuse, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment." Outlaw Why would you say that? I read the entire article.
Only experienced homeschool parents please!?
I have a three year old daughter and I am a stay at home mom. I was going to stay at home with her until it was time for her to go to school, but we had really thought about homeschooling. Lately her dad has really been expressing his want for her to be home schooled. Everyone I talk to about it always gasps and says " don't do that to her" . I am really contemplating trying it out, but my aunt, who is a county school counselor that has worked with social services in our county and the schools for 30 years, told me that a lot of home schooled children, if they do get integrated into public schools later, are behind the other children. It kind of made me feel like she didn't think i could be successful at it. its something that i would really like to try, maybe just k 5, but im scared that i wont be good at it, or she wont learn as much as other children in a school, and that my kid will be stupid I went to college with home schooled children, they were really smart. I have a 2 year degree in music and a diploma in office systems. so here is my question, is it hard to home school children k 5 and be successful at it? Does your child enjoy it? Do they want to be in public school? How much does it cost, and general information that anyone could give me would be greatly appriciated.
Advice from homeschool parents please.?
My 11 y.o. attends Montessori school. She has dyslexia and was really struggling academically and with bullying in public school. Montessori school is a better environment but she is still having trouble with bullying, and feels dumb due to her friends being better spellers and readers. Lately I have really thought that homeschooling is the best step. My reason is that homeschooling can function quite like a montessori classroom, and my daughter wont be subjected to teasing and bullying.I have doubts about myself. Will I be organised enough? Will I ruin my childrens opportunities? What about advanced maths? I also suffer from managed depression and worry that is a reason not to homeschool? I guess I'm wondering how to determine if I am up to the task. my other two children are 2 and 3 I cant do worse than public school, but montessori is quite good for her. But I feel I could achieve all that montessori does and more, without the bullys, at home? Advice? Opinions?thanks so much for the advice so far I am inspired

A series of questions from a new homeschool parent of 3&5yo. Considering hsch till high school.?
1. Do you kids ask you why are they not in school?2. I hv a very practical spouse who sees the only advantage he sees abt hsch is not having to pay fees. How do I make him see about other advantages? How do you garner genuine support from your spouse?3. How do you fill up the feeling of missing out?4. How do you maintain your sanity? How do you get your " ME" time as an individual who has their own interest & goals?5. How do you rebut words & reaction from well meaning but uninformed family & frens? How do you prepare your kids for such reaction?6. How is your schedule like? I read that some hsch families are guided not by daily schedules but more of weekly, monthly or even yearly. Sometimes you may slacken, how do you keep yourself disciplined?7. How do you counter offer subjects that you are not familiar?9. What are your concerns as homeschool parents? It's ok if you choose not to answer due to personal reasons, but pls serious answers from homeschool parents onlyThanking you in advance for sharing your hsch's experience.
Homeschool parents...?
Is it your desire to replace " credentialed" teachers?I just read a comment by a question poster that pointed out that homeschool parents will never be able to replace " credentialed" teachers, so I want to hear your viewpoint on that.Did it ever cross your mind at all to replace teachers of any type when you made the decision to exercise your freedom to educate your children? I've heard a lot of strange comments about homeschooling, but this was new and I was wondering if anyone felt that way.
Homeschool parents, what would your dream homeschool room be like?
We are remodeling a house and I'm looking for ideas for the room where we will do most of our " sitting down" school. Of course our learning happens anywhere and everywhere. Our dining room will be next to the kitchen, and that's what I would like to have as our main school room. I'll put our current books there, craft materials, etc. What ideas do you have for me? So far I'm thinking plenty of bookshelves, space for craft bins, vinyl flooring for paint spills, bright lighting ...All ideas welcome Our budget is limited, but I'd like to consider all the possibilities.
